5 Tips for a Healthier Heart

(DGIwire) – One in every three deaths in the United States in 2013 was caused by heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases, according to the American Heart Association’s 2016 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update. With the stakes so high, it is clearly vital for everyone to ensure their heart stays as healthy as possible. Here are seven tips to keep that ticker in tip-top shape:

Don’t smoke or use tobacco. Smoking or using tobacco of any kind is one of the most significant risk factors for developing heart disease, says the Mayo Clinic. Chemicals in tobacco can damage heart and blood vessels, leading to narrowing of the arteries.

Exercise for about 30 minutes daily. Getting some regular, daily exercise can reduce the risk of heart disease, the Mayo Clinic reports. It can help control weight and reduce chances of developing other conditions that may put a strain on the heart.

Manage blood pressure. If blood pressure gets too high, the extra force has shown it can damage artery walls and create scar tissue, making it harder for blood and oxygen to get to and from the heart, reports WebMD. Get blood pressure checked at least once every two years.

Slash saturated fats. Too much “bad” cholesterol has shown it can clog the heart and arteries with dangerous plaque, according to WebMD. This comes mostly from saturated and trans fats, found in red meat, full-fat dairy products and fried or processed foods.

Maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight can lead to conditions (e.g. high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes) that increase the risk of heart disease. Even a small weight loss can be beneficial, reports the Mayo Clinic.
