(DGIwire) – Every year, a new crop of college graduates begins their first “real” job in the professional arena. According to CNBC, the class of 2016 had something to smile about: U.S. employers were expected to hire about five percent more grads than the previous year. And while they may be unlikely to stay in their very first gig forever, there are numerous strategies that new workers can adopt to make the most of their entry-level jobs. Here are a few ideas:
- Do the best possible work: Whatever responsibilities the job involves, the goal should be to master them. Some mundane tasks will probably be involved but the way they are performed will be noted. Undoubtedly, managers will admire a performance if daily responsibilities are attacked with the same aplomb workers bring to the things they are actually excited to do.
- There are no small parts, only small actors: In movies and TV, the stars may get most of the screen time but without side characters the story couldn’t move forward. Workers should recognize they play an important role in the organization. No matter how small a job may seem, it is a critical part of the company’s operation—otherwise there wouldn’t be a paycheck attached.
- Don’t limit the job responsibilities: Volunteer to do more than what was contained in the job description. Even if the offer is met with, “Thanks, but not this time,” the fact that the worker was willing to pitch in will be noted. Sooner or later, a willingness to do more will be harnessed—and the worker will become a more valuable asset as a result.
- Learn how to be resourceful: Coworkers will feel relieved knowing they can throw a task to a new colleague and it will get completed. In a world where there are so many ways to access information, “Can’t do that” shouldn’t be a response unless a task is truly out of an employee’s hands.
- Attitude matters: Don’t be influenced by office politics. Stay neutral. Remember, people hire people they like—and being likeable is one of the things that helps some entry-level workers get promoted more quickly than others.
